Evan Micheels is a North Bennett Street School-trained piano tuner and technician, as well as a Registered Piano Technician (RPT) with the Piano Technician's Guild.
As an avid pianist and piano enthusiast, Evan understands that, whether a musical tool, a family heirloom, or a best friend, a piano can be a hugely meaningful part of one's life. With this mindset, Evan treats every instrument with the utmost care and respect, and strives to bring each piano to its highest potential.
E&B is family owned and operated, run by Evan, his partner Brittany, and Lucy, their daughter.
Registered Piano Technician status indicates that a technician has passed a series of three exams, designed to ensure a satisfactory level of competence and skill in the trade. These exams include a written portion to test knowledge of the piano, a technical portion to test competency in regulation and repair, and a tuning portion to test competence in aural piano tuning.
A Basic Tuning appointment is meant for a piano that is close to pitch and has been tuned regularly (at least once per year). Don't know how close your piano is? Don't worry! We will measure it and let you know if you should opt for a Pitch Adjustment.
This appointment is appropriate for pianos which are far off pitch (4+ cents), requiring more than one tuning pass. This is commonly the result of being tuned too infrequently or existing in climatically unstable environments.
Each of your piano's 88 keys, when depressed, sets in motion a complex chain of mechanical events which results in the hammer's striking the string and sounding the notes. Regulation is the proper adjustment and timing of these parts, necessary for good tonal control, articulation, and dynamic range.
Your piano may sound "dull," "harsh," "tinny," or any other of a host of tonal descriptors. Voicing the hammers involves softening or hardening the felts to produce a pleasing and even tone.
We can provide you a thorough report of your piano's condition, along with recommended repairs and improvements.
Looking into purchasing a new or used instrument? Hire us to evaluate and assess the condition of the piano you are looking into so you can make an informed decision before purchasing.
This appointment includes a thorough cleaning of your piano's case, soundboard, keyboard, action, and action cavity.
Tuning is our best diagnostic tool. We will take note of any needed repairs as we tune your instrument. However, if you are aware of a specific issue with your piano, we are happy for you to schedule us to take a look.
Your piano's mechanical parts - the action - may be worn out from age and heavy use. We can revive your instrument by replacing the action parts, hammers, felts, cloth, and leather, which together affect the way your keyboard feels as you play it. This service includes a touchweight analysis, full regulation, and tuning.
New England is beautiful, but a harsh climate for pianos which are affected significantly by shifts in humidity. You can extend the life of your tunings by having us install a Piano Lifesaver localized humidity control system.
